In the medieval quarter of the town stands the ancient Cathedral, founded in the 9th century, dedicated to San Pietro Apostolo. The church has undergone several alterations and was enlarged in the 17th century. A staircase leads up to the porch which has four arches. The tall brick bell tower has three rows of mullion windows. Some ancient remains of Roman architecture have been incorporated into the building.
There is a small dome over one chapel covered in majolica tiles.
The interior of the Cathedral is richly decorated and contains ancient frescoes dating back to the 15th and 12th centuries, some notable paintings and a Paschal candlestick which dates from 1264.
The 13th century pulpit is supported by six carved stone pillars and is lavishly embellished with “Cosmati” mosaic work in a Moorish geometric style.
