In the square stands the little stone church of San Francesco which was constructed in approximately 1320, by Roffredo III Caetani, nephew of Pope Boniface VIII.  Inside there is a beautiful fresco depicting the Madonna delle Grazie, in whose honour the annual “Sagra delle Regne” is celebrated every July.

In the highest part of the town there is an impressive castle or baronial palace, which was built at the turn of the 9th century by Pope Leo III.  It hosted several notable guests such as Saint Thomas Aquinus in 1272, Alfonso of Aragon in 1452, Isabella Colonna and Giulia Gonzaga.   The fortified town had three main gates: La Portella, S. Stefano and Porta Nuova.

Nearby is the Convent of San Francesco.  The original convent was built in approximately 1320 by Roffredo III Caetani on the site of ancient Francescan chapel. The building we see today was built in 1893 .

Next to the castle there is a small park with a war memorial.

From the main piazza there are magnificent views of the Scauri promontory and in the distance the Gaeta pennisula.

The Roman city was eventually destroyed by repeated Saracen invasions which prompted the population of Minturnae to flee inland to a higher vantage point.

A new fortified town was founded named Traetto,  at a height of 147 metres above sea level.

The Saracens were eventually driven out of the area by Pope John X and the Catholic league following the Battle оf Garigliano in 915.  However in 917 the town was sacked by the Hungarian Magyars.

In 1058 Traetto  briefly became the possession of the Abbey of Montecassino, however  in  1062 Riccardo I dell’Aquila, the duke of Gaeta and nephew оf Pope Boniface VIII, took possession of the town.

In the 14th century ownership transferred to the Caetani family.
